Filamente – Native iPad Client for Sharepoint: Coming Soon

Just Another iPad Blog 8 Sep 2010, 11:22 pm CEST

FilamenteforiPad

Filamente is an upcoming iPad app that is a native client for Sharepoint.  It’s described thusly in their Twitter bio:

Filamente, a native iPad client for SharePoint, allows you to perform various tasks that you cannot do using a regular web browser on your Apple iPad

I haven’t found a lot of details on the app as yet – other than a few screenshots here.  Then again, I haven’t seen many iOS apps at all – and none for the iPad – that act as Sharepoint clients.  It’s been a long while since I had any exposure to Sharepoint, but whenever I did I thought it was very impressive – so I would imagine iPad Sharepoint client apps could be a big deal for many corporate users.

Filamente is expected to be released on the App Store on September 12, at an introductory price of $2.99.  In the meantime, you can follow @filamente on Twitter for news.

VMware Is Planning an iPad App

Just Another iPad Blog 8 Sep 2010, 5:02 pm CEST

VMWareFusion

VMware – makers of leading virtualization software – apparently have plans for an iPad app. They’ve even shown an early preview of their VMware View for iPad app at the recent VMworld conference.

VMware briefly showed off its in-development iPad client during the VMworld keynote address, including the ability to have a desktop “follow” a user from one device to the next. That means a user can log into a desktop on a PC, then shift to an iPad, and then move to a laptop, and the user state and settings will remain intact each time the user switches devices.

Mware View iPad users will click on an icon that brings them to their full desktop, but with the iPad’s touchscreen interface, including a virtual keyboard and touch-based mouse.

There’s no word yet on when we may see this app – but it’s one I’ll be looking forward to trying out.  I use VMware Fusion every day on my MacBook Pro, it’s an essential app for me.

Crazy iPad Numbers – 28 Million Sales Predicted for Next Year

Just Another iPad Blog 8 Sep 2010, 4:25 pm CEST

iPadSalesPrediction

That’s the headline from a report at Apple Insider earlier today – covering one analyst’s prediction that Apple will sell 28 million iPads in 2011.

That feels like an enormous number, though I imagine it will be easier to put it in context once we see what number of iPads are sold in 2010.  I’m guessing around 10 million.

iPad at Work – Storm Tracking

Just Another iPad Blog 7 Sep 2010, 11:42 pm CEST

Not sure it’s a great idea to expose the iPad to those sort of rough conditions – hopefully the’ve got some heavy-duty protection for it.   TUAW reckons that is The Weather Channel’s app they’re using on it.

I’m definitely leaving my iPad at home today – as we’re getting clobbered with rain and storms in Texas.

Black Enterprise for iPad Updated – Performance Improvements & Minor Enhancements

Just Another iPad Blog 7 Sep 2010, 11:11 pm CEST

BEUpdated

Black Enterprise Wealth for Life for iPad has been updated over the weekend, to Version 1.2.  This is not a major update, as the version number would indicate – but it’s got some welcome improvements.  Here’s the full list of changes:

  • Fixed issue where downloads were discontinued when device sleeps
  • Users can now manage issues in Library
  • Improved download speed of issues
  • Download progress now more clearly indicated
  • Memory management improvements
  • Bookmarks, Notes and Social Network Setup now available without setting a Reader Account
  • Improved video streaming speed and stability

I’ve applied the update and seen most of the improvements mentioned above.  The showing of download progress is a very welcome addition.  I hope that next on their list is getting the app to remember where you left off when you exit and go back in.  You can find this latest version of Black Enterprise in the App Store now, and it’s a free app.

iPad in the Enterprise: SAP Has Already Given iPads to 1,000 Employees

Just Another iPad Blog 7 Sep 2010, 7:04 pm CEST

SAPiPadTweet

SAP – a blue-chip player in the enterprise software arena – has rolled out 1,000 iPads to staff members around the world.

Talk about eating your own, delicious dog food: SAP CIO Oliver Bussmann tweeted yesterday that the enterprise software vendor has already rolled out iPads to 1,000 employees.

And this isn’t just a superficial show of support for SAP’s new-found embrace of mobility: according to Bussmann, every iPad comes with e-mail, Virtual Private Network (VPN) access to server-based applications through Citrix software and Business Intelligence tools via BusinessObjects.

Review: Google Earth for iPhone and iPad

MacWorld: ipad 7 Sep 2010, 2:47 pm CEST

We take a second look at Google's free app that puts the world at your fingertips and find that many complaints remain, even after an update to optimize Google Earth for the iPad. This iOS version of the software really pales in comparison to the desktop version, with bizarre omissions of seemingly perfect-for-mobile features.

Success of Samsung Galaxy Tab doomed by carrier contracts

MacWorld: ipad 6 Sep 2010, 6:25 pm CEST

Tony Bradley sees the iPad holding a potential advantage over Samsung's Galaxy Tab. The latter will likely have contracts with carriers that won't compare to the iPad's no-commitment contract for 3G service.

iPad at Work – at Lloyds of London

Just Another iPad Blog 6 Sep 2010, 5:56 pm CEST

LloydsTrialsiPads

Apple’s iPad has broken into yet another enterprise sector, this time the insurance industry with internationally-known insurer, Lloyds, working with brokers to test use of the Apple device in its underwriting room.

The trial began this month and will see iPads used instead of the more traditional underwriting slips. Brokers, Marsh, Cooper Gay and RK Harrison Group are testing the Apple devices.

Its hard to think of a more blue chip name than Lloyds of London when it comes to international financial institutions.  This news is further evidence that the iPad is already having far more impact in the enterprise arena than anyone (except maybe Steve Jobs and a few other Apple execs) expected.

Review: iBrainstorm for iPad

MacWorld: ipad 6 Sep 2010, 4:45 pm CEST

This app turns your iPad into a virtual whiteboard and lets iPhone users with a free companion app wirelessly contribute notes to your brainstorming session. It's a promising idea, but one that ultimately has too many limitations to be the creative collaborative tool iBrainstorm's developer envisions.
